What is Well Versed?

Brian Cauley in the Studio

Well Versed was created in the Eastern Canadian studios of CFXU Radio. Born out of the creative, yet sometimes disorganized, community of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Well Versed began to bring local poets together. With the support of fellow CFXU directors and radio hosts, I was urged to expand the reach of Well Versed. Eventually Well Versed grew into something more. Soon people around the campus began to talk about the show and more poets began to approach me about coming on-air to read poetry and do interviews.

The inspiration for the show came from the live poetry, or “Slam Poetry”, circuit. After being introduced to Slam Poetry in the Nation’s Capital, I knew I had discovered something

magical. I wanted to share the passion, the excitement, and the poetry with as many people as possible. I thought that the power of spoken word should not be limited by any means. Something as captivating and inspiring as poetry surely would be well suited for the audio world of radio.

In the first season I attended the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word to network with poets and record live material for the show. The poets I met over the five days in Halifax served as the base content for the rest of the season. The show also served as a launching vehicle for poetry books and the first live poetry event for CFXU Radio.

Well Versed is now launching the second season independently to ensure the positive energy generated in the first season continues. Well Versed has a mandate to promote Canadian poetry without judgement or criticism in order to inspire discussion amongst Canadians. Everyone at Well Versed will always try to remain true to all the words found within poetry played and performed on-air.
